My Interview with Author Jasmine Haynes

When did you first realize you wanted to become a Writer/author?

I know most writers probably say this, but I actually started writing stories almost as soon as I could write. I wrote short stories. And in my high school English class, I wrote my first book for a project. Writing has always been my dream job.

Where do you get your ideas for your book?

Stories ideas come from life. I could be watching a movie, talking to a friend, see something at the grocery store, read an article, hear about something that happened. But also, I put myself to sleep by making up stories. And if I really like what I came up with before I fall asleep (and remember it in the morning), then that becomes a plot as well.

What kind of things do you enjoy when not writing?

I love hiking. I live in the Redwoods of Northern California, so there are lots of great places to hike. I also enjoy watching movies and TV shows, working in my atrium garden, doing needlepoint, cooking, baking. I also used to do stained glass, but I don’t have a good setup for it in my new house so I haven’t been able to do that for a while. If I ever get a nice workroom, I’ll start my stained glass work again.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written over 50 books. It’s very hard to pick a favorite because there was always something I liked about each one. But in the end, I’d have to choose the Max Starr series, which I write under my Jasmine Haynes pseudonym, as my favorite. I seemed to channel those books. The characters were just so real to me. The first book in the series, Dead to the Max, is free as an ebook on most retailers like Amazon, iBooks, Nook, etc.

Do you have any suggestions to help others who have a passion for writing?

First, join an organization like the Romance Writers of America. They have fabulous classes on honing the writing craft. Second, write. Try to eke out at least a page a day. And never give up!

What do you think makes a great story?

Great characters make a great story. They have to be people that seem real, though I don’t necessarily like them. I’ve read plenty of great books where I didn’t actually like the characters, but they were totally believable. And they were wrapped up in a totally believable story, doing things real people would do, even if it’s not the right thing to do.

Which Writer/Authors inspire you?

I grew up on writers like Victoria Holt, Phyllis Whitney, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Laurie McBain, Nora Roberts. All these authors pulled me into the worlds they created. I couldn’t wait for their next book to come out. And they inspired me to write the best stories I can.

What are you working on at the moment?(optional)

I’m working on the next book in my Jennifer Skully office romance series, Pretty in Pink Slip, After Office Hours, Book 3. I’ll have the book out this summer.

What genre are your books?

I write in several different genres. Jennifer Skully is romantic comedy, humorous mystery, office romance, reincarnation. And Jasmine Haynes is my erotic side, writing contemporary erotic romance and paranormal mystery.

What drew you to the genre you write?

I’ve been writing a long time so what I love to write has changed a lot during that period. The Max Starr series from Jasmine Haynes came first because I loved paranormal mystery. This isn’t vampires or werewolves, but psychics and ghosts. I also wanted to write on the light side, which is the romantic comedy from Jennifer Skully, usually involving a mystery as well. But when erotic romance began to get big, I decided to try my hand at that as well, and found I loved writing the naughty stuff as well. And because I was an accountant in my former life, many of my books are set in the business world, like my After Office Hours series. As Jennifer Skully, I’m also writing a contemporary romance billionaire series with Bella Andre, the Maverick Billionaires. So I switch around, and that way I never get bored with writing the same thing.

Which Actor/Actress would you like to see portraying the lead character from your most recent book?(any book you like)

I would love to have Dylan McDermott play Brett Baker, the hero in my latest work, Pretty in Pink Slip. Dylan McDermott is totally hot, and just the right age for my hero. I love writing older heroes.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m a full-time writer, including all the promotion and marketing that goes with it

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Definitely the hardest part of writing is promoting yourself. I’m not a good marketer. It’s very hard to put yourself out there all the time.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded Writer’s block?

The truth is I don’t believe in writer’s block. Yes, there are days where what we write is total crap and it will get axed on the chopping block. But as long as a writer is writing, whether it’s crap or not, then eventually the words will start flowing again. I think that rather than calling it writer’s block, it’s really that we don’t know what’s going to happen next. But as long as you keep writing, it will eventually come. See the theme here? Just write, even if you’re afraid that what you’re writing is crap, even if you’re afraid that your idea isn’t any good, even if you don’t know what’s going to happen, even if you don’t have an idea. Write about your character. Write about the town he or she lives in. Write about his or her family. Write about the worst thing that happened to him, the best thing. Just write.

Do you read much, and if so who are your favorite Authors or genres?

I actually listen to audiobooks more than I read, because I can be doing other things (like cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc). I love reading mysteries. A few of my favorite authors are Greg Iles, Karin Slaughter, John Hart, Lee Child, Michael Connelly.

How can Readers discovery more about you and your work?(please provide proper links)

My Review of Witch Wars pt 1 by T.A. Moorman

Description

Underlayes is another dimension where all sorts of nocturnal creatures reside; witches, vampires, fae, shifters, werewolves…… The dimension was created by all of these creatures working side by side to escape the scrutiny and danger to their very existence that stemmed from the human world. Humans tend to fear things they do not understand and tend to try and eliminate anything that they fear. Even though these nocturnal beings were actually humanoid themselves as well, just different, more enhanced, than their day bearing brethren...

Amongst those beings lies a very powerful witch, Tialanna, who is to become the queen of all Underlayes witches.

Thinking the worst part of her life was the fact that she was betrothed to a complete stranger while in love with someone else. She is in for a rude awakening when she discovers the truth of who, and what, she truly is.

Tialanna is about to learn the truth behind several lies, because not only does her life depend on it, but so does the fate of the family she never even knew she had. But hey, life would probably just be boring if she didn't have to deal with elemental witches, vampires, demons, sorcerers, bindings, spells and whatnot, right?

My Interview with Author Angie Fox

When did you first realize you wanted to become a Writer/author?

I’ve always loved to write, but at first I went about it more practically. At the University of Missouri, I studied journalism. After graduation, I worked as an advertising copywriter for Minute Maid Lemonade, Office Max, and Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks.

But I always loved to read. And I think when you’re a big reader, it makes you want to try writing a novel. At least, that’s what happened to me. I started my first novel in 2000, wrote three that didn’t sell, and then sold to Dorchester Publishing in 2008.

Where do you get your ideas for your book?

From life, really. That may sound funny coming from a Southern cozy mystery writer. Although come to think of it, I have contemplated murder a few times in traffic or when dealing with my extended family. But, really, ideas come from living life. The funny little moments make the best book moments.

What kind of things do you enjoy when not writing?

As always, I’m a huge reader. I’ll read several books per week. I also like cooking, traveling, taking my kids to fun places, walking the dog, and going to Cardinal baseball games.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Right now, I’m at 15 novels, and 12 short stories/short story collections. My favorite is always the one I’m working on right now! But if I had to pick, I’d say the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter mysteries holds a special place in my heart. It’s called Southern Spirits and it’s actually free right now on all the major ebook vendors.

Do you have any suggestions to help others who have a passion for writing?

Yes. Do it! It’s a wonderful way to completely immerse yourself in another world. It can also be a great way to make a living.

What do you think makes a great story?

I think it all comes down to character. You have to care about the people in the story before you care about what happens to them.

Which Writer/Authors inspire you?

Elizabeth Peters made me want to write mysteries. I just love her Amelia Peabody series. In fact, every once in awhile, I’ll read the entire series from first book to last, and it’s always even more amazing than I remembered. I also really like Charlaine Harris, Rhys Bowen, and Anne Rice.

What are you working on at the moment?(optional)

I’m writing the sixth book in the Southern Ghost Hunter mysteries, called (for now) Murder on the Sugarland Express. It’s an homage to the Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries I grew up reading and it’s so much fun to write. I came up with the idea after having a ball with Deader Homes and Gardens, which is the fourth book in the series, and an homage to the Southern gothic mysteries I grew up reading. Readers can enjoy it for the story, but fans of the genre will find all of the little hidden Easter eggs.

What genre are your books?

I write small town Southern cozies with a twist. They’re very warm, character-driven stories with a touch of spooky and lots of suspense.

What drew you to the genre you write?

Mysteries are so much fun to read, and to write. And I’ve always loved ghost stories. So why not combine them?

Which Actor/Actress would you like to see portraying the lead character from your most recent book?(any book you like)

Hmm…I’d say Reese Witherspoon. She’s cute, spunky, and not afraid to get the job done.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m happy to say writing is my full-time job.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Making what’s in my head match what’s on the page.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded Writer’s block?

That’s tough. There’s nothing you can do, except turn off the internet, turn off the distractions, sit down at the computer, and write through it. It’s not glamorous or easy, but it works!

Do you read much, and if so who are your favorite Authors or genres?

I read a ton. My favorite genres are cozy mystery, sci fi romance, historical romance, and biographies. Some non-fiction as well, like the book: Stiff, which is what happens to bodies after people donate them to science. I go for quirky, interesting books. I think you need to read a lot in order to be prolific when you want to write a lot. Reading frees up the words, if that makes sense.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

I’m not sure how long Southern Spirits will be free in ebook, but if it’s still free when this interview goes live, your readers should check it out.

Here’s one link that lists all the vendors:

My Review: His Christmas Surprise by Summerita Rhayne

Description

She stole his Christmas dinner and left him with a kiss.

Dan Tollinger is having a bad Christmas. His wife lost her battle with cancer and he’s finding it hard to manage his two sons. Busy with his shop he has little time left for them, so having a woman around to keep an eye on them seems like an ideal solution.

Tonya needs premises to run her business after her bakery got damaged in a fire. With a son to bring up on her own, the sensible option is to accept Dan’s job offer to housekeep while putting her business back on the track.

Neither counted on the unexpected warmth and awareness that sprang up between them. Would it be wise to let it kindle to desire and then something more?

Especially when his sons are not ready to accept her in his life.

My Review

I so loved this book and the characters Dan & Tonya...It definitely was quite a tear-jerker at times...but I really like the way the Author Summerita Rhayne writes her style is amazing...Will be reading more by this Author most definitely :)

My Interview with Author Michelle Somers

1.     When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer/author?
I’ve always loved to write, and I’ve always written – since the moment I learned how – both poems and short stories, but for my eyes only. I never thought I’d be good enough to be published, and truth? I never had the confidence to try. So I didn’t for a very long time.
It wasn’t until I waved my last child off to kinder that I thought to give writing a go. That was seven years ago. My first book – a contemporary romance – took six weeks to write … and it will never see the light of day. I did everything wrong, broke all the rules I didn’t know existed, but through that process I learned one valuable fact – I could start and finish an entire book. Over the next couple of years I joined writers groups – both the Melbourne Romance Writers Guild and Romance Writers of Australia – read craft books, attended workshops, conferences, formed a critique group. I learned the craft and practised what I learned. Five books later I reached a very valuable realization – I was targeting the wrong genre. It was then I moved from contemporary romance to romantic suspense, and it was then that my first published novel, Lethal in Love, was born.

2.     Where do you get your ideas for your book?
Great question! I get my ideas from everywhere. What I see, what I hear, life experiences – mine, other people’s. And just life in general. Everything can be a story, it really depends on which slant you give it and how far your imagination takes you.

3.     What kind of things do you enjoy when not writing?
Family time with my boys, three small, one big. We go on outings, camping trips, have movie nights and game nights and general fun just being together.

4.     How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written five unpublished and two published novels. It’s so hard to pick a favourite, although if pushed I’d choose my debut, Lethal in Love. Mainly because this story was my a-ha moment – the first time I let passion lead me into a genre I thought I could never write. It was also the first time I wrote for my own enjoyment and stopped worrying what other people might like. I guess you’d say it’s the first time I was true to myself and my story.

5.     Do you have any suggestions to help others who have a passion for writing?
Yes. Give it a go. Don’t worry about what people will think or what stories you think they’ll like. Write something you love, a book you’d want to pick up and lose yourself in, and be true to your story. Read books in your genre, lots of them. Learn the craft, never stop reading, never stop writing. Dig deep, write true, and pour emotion onto every page. Find a like-minded group and surround yourself with people who will support and cheer you on.
But most important? Just write. You’ll never create a story if you don’t put pen to paper and … JUST WRITE.

6.     What do you think makes a great story?
Interesting, engaging, believable characters.
Yes, plot is important, but without the characters to drive that plot forward all you have is an empty story with no heart.

7.     Which Writer/Authors inspire you?
Agatha Christie is one of my very early favorites. Along with Carolyn Keene, C.S.Lewis, Louisa May Alcott and Judy Blume, she helped shape my modern day reading choices. These days I read and admire so many fabulous authors, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are Harlan Coben and Mary Higgins Clark for their danger and suspense, and Janet Elizabeth Henderson, Amy Andrews and Christie Craig for their quirky, laugh-out-loud romance.

8.     What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a great new series set in Chicago, a kind of Stephanie Plum meets James Bond. Something quirky, mysterious, sexy and surprising. And I’m also working on a series of ‘how to’ books for aspiring authors called The Simply Writing Series. The first in this series, Simply Synopsis, is due for release next month, in May.

9.     What genre are your books?
Romantic suspense. I always try to inject a dash of humor, tempered with the chill of suspense. And, of course, the romance is sizzling hot. These are the books I love to read, so it stands to reason I just have to write them J

10. What drew you to the genre you write?
I’ve always loved crime, mystery, thrillers and suspense. And, of course, romance. And what I love more than all of these genres alone is a story with all these genres melded together in perfect harmony. There are very few books out there with equal components of romance and suspense, so I’ve made it my mission to change this. I love how the highs and lows of both genres complement each other, and I love knowing that I can put my characters through a hell of a journey, yet they will always find their way back to each other. And they’ll always find their happy ever after.

11. Which Actor/Actress would you like to see portraying the lead characters from one of your books?
I’ll choose my first novel, Lethal in Love. In this story, homicide detective Jayda Thomasz is hunting the sadistic Night Terror serial killer and reporter Seth Friedin is hunting a story.
Scarlett Johansson would be great for Jayda. With her red hair and stunning green eyes, as she was in the movie, Iron Man, not only does she look like my image of Jayda, but her character is a perfect match. Jayda has sass and attitude. A hard exterior, but once you break through that shell and gain her trust, she’ll walk barefoot over hot coals for you. Her loyalty will be as solid as diamond. And just as valuable.
As for Seth, Chris Hemsworth just fits. He’s sexy, brooding, and when he smiles, women swoon. He can be ruthless the way a hard-headed reporter must be, but underneath he has a charm and caring that is irresistible. Jayda won’t be able to resist him. I know I couldn’t.

12. Do you write full-time or part-time?
I write full-time. I’m lucky to have an incredible, supportive husband who believes I should do everything I can to follow my dream. And my dream is writing.

13. What is the hardest thing about writing?
The solitude. Sitting alone in a room, in front of a computer, day after day, with no one to talk to. Thank goodness for the friends I’ve met through Melbourne Romance Writers Guild and Romance Writers of Australia. These wonderful people keep me grounded, they keep me sane and, most of all, they keep me from striking up conversations with strange and random coconuts (that’s a weird Tom Hanks, Cast Away reference, for those who haven’t seen the movie).

14. Any tips on how to get through the dreaded Writer’s block?
Take a break and refill the well. Go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie, catch up with friends. If I have a block, rather than pushing through solid rock, I take time out and give my subconscious time to figure out what happens next.

15. Do you read much, and if so, who are your favorite Authors or genres?
I love reading! As I mentioned earlier, I love romance and anything suspense/murder/crime-related. I have so many favorite authors – Helene Young, Janet Elizabeth Henderson, Stefanie London, Christie Craig, Mary Higgins Clark, Harlan Coben, and I could go on ... At the moment I’m on a Nalini Singh reading binge. I’m embarrassed to admit, I’ve only just discovered how much I love her writing style and stories.

16. How can Readers discover more about you and your work?
